Along the way he rescues Agata, disguised as a man, from a witchcraft trial, and they become inseparable allies. As Báthory marries Anna Jagiellon and ascends the throne, Mroczek navigates court intrigues, battles old friend Samuel Zborowski, and ultimately confronts Jan Zamoyski’s ambitions.
