María Nicolasa Cruz, an illiterate young Mazahua woman, travels to Mexico City in search of a better life, only to be swept into a chain of misunderstandings and conspiracies that make her an unlikely suspect in thefts and murders. Amid discrimination, corruption, and absurdity, her innocence ultimately exposes an international criminal network and changes not only her own future but that of her entire community.
